My first and second publications both appeared in Lived Magazine, a Canadian publication filled with the voices of people with lived / living experience with mental health and addiction issues.
I was thrilled with my first publication acceptance, my story “Mee-Maw”, giving me the confidence to truly pursue writing and more publications. It was a short creative nonfiction piece about the death of my grandmother on my father’s side. Because of a writing group I was involved with, Inkwell Workshops, I was beginning to explore my own personal story, particularly from when I was younger. I believe it was through Inkwell that I learned of Lived Magazine, and it was definitely because of attending the Inkwell write-ins that I had the courage to submit (more on Inkwell in later blog posts).
When Lived Magazine had their second call for submission on the theme of Love, I submit another creative nonfiction piece, “The Haircut”, about a time when I cut my own hair because I wanted to be different. I see areas for improvement in both, but I also see them as the beginning of my journey to becoming a professional writer. Because of their significance to my writing history, they remain some of my favourite pieces. I hope you enjoy them.

Thanks for letting me part of your writing journey. I loved both stories, which must have been before we became best of friends with your Mom and Dad. I remember neither occasion. Keep writing. You're good. Leslie
What a great snapshot of your journey. I love both stories.
